Love & Music: A Teacher's Guide to Valentine's Day in Galway's Heart

Hey fellow romantics! I'm Aisling, and when I'm not teaching little ones at Scoil Mhuire or playing fiddle at local sessions, I'm soaking up all the magic Galway has to offer. Let me share how we celebrate Valentine's Day in our cozy corner of Ireland – trust me, it's nothing like those cookie-cutter celebrations you'll find elsewhere!

Why Valentine's in Galway Hits Different

Forget the mass-produced cards and generic chocolate boxes. Here in Galway, we've mastered the art of turning February 14th into something truly special. Maybe it's the salty Atlantic breeze, or the way our medieval streets wind like lovers' paths – but romance just feels different here.

My Perfect Valentine's Itinerary (Tried & Tested!)

Morning Magic (9:00-11:00)

Start your day at my absolute favorite spot, Ard Bia at Nimmo's. Housed in a 200-year-old stone building by the Spanish Arch, their Irish breakfast is pure love on a plate. Pro tip: Request a window seat for views of swans gliding across Galway Bay. The coffee here is legendary, and their homemade scones? Heaven!

Creative Connection (11:30-2:00)

Here's something unique – skip the usual gift-buying and head to Galway Craft Studio. Last year, I taught my partner how to make a traditional Celtic love knot pendant. There's something incredibly intimate about creating something together, especially when you're surrounded by the warmth of local artisans sharing their craft.

Afternoon Adventure (2:30-5:00)

Bundle up (February in Galway can be chilly!) and take the most romantic walk along Salthill Promenade. I always stop at Ground & Co for their hot chocolate – it's the perfect hand-warmer. Watch for the moment when the sun starts to dip, painting the sky in valentines of pink and gold over the Atlantic.

Evening Enchantment (6 :00 onwards)

Now, here's where my insider knowledge really comes in handy. Skip the overcrowded "Valentine's specials" and head to Tig Cóilí around 7 :30. Every Tuesday (Valentine's Day 2025 falls on a Tuesday!), we have the most incredible traditional music session. Picture this : candlelit corners, the heart-stirring sounds of fiddles and flutes, and the warm buzz of conversation. I'll likely be there with my fiddle, so come say hi!

Insider Tips You Won't Find Elsewhere:

  1. Book Ard Bia at least three weeks in advance – it's everyone's favorite!
  2. The craft workshops often sell out by January, so plan ahead
  3. Bring a lock for the Love Lock Bridge near the Spanish Arch (a recent tradition we've borrowed)
  4. Pack an umbrella – Galway weather is famously unpredictable

What Makes Our Valentine's Special

In my classroom, I teach my students that love isn't just about romance – it's about community, tradition, and genuine connection. That's exactly what Valentine's Day in Galway represents. Whether you're madly in love, flying solo, or somewhere in between, you'll find your place in our celebration.

The best part? While other cities might wind down after dinner, Galway's Valentine's celebration is just warming up. The music sessions go late, the conversations flow like Guinness, and strangers become friends over shared stories and songs.

Remember, love in Galway isn't about grand gestures or perfect plans – it's about embracing the moment, whether that's dancing to an impromptu street performance or sharing a quiet moment watching the waves crash against the shore.

See you here! And if you hear a fiddle playing at Tig Cóilí , come over and request your favorite love song . Just maybe not "Danny Boy" – we hear that one quite enough! 😉

With love from Galway,
Aisling
